About Dental Sedation
Chattanooga Family Dentistry offers three forms of sedation dentistry to patients who experience extreme anxiety during dental appointments. The sedation methods that a patient can choose from include oral conscious sedation, sedation administered through nitrous oxide, and IV sedation. As one of only two general dentists who perform IV sedation in the Chattanooga area, you can trust that Dr. Lunn puts his patient's comfort and well-being first.
Oral Sedation - Commonly referred to as "pill" sedation dentistry, this method doesn't provide pain relief during a procedure. If a patient plans to undergo a restorative, general or cosmetic dentistry procedure that requires drilling, pulling, or filing a local anesthetic is administered to the region of the mouth that is being treated. Typically, there are no side effects relating to oral sedation. Most patients can resume regular activities as soon as the medication wares off.
Laughing Gas - Laughing gas is generally used to eliminate worry and nervousness, making a patient more comfortable while Dr. Lunn completes a planned dental procedure. The sedation method allows patients to feel "out of it" and as if they were floating on a cloud. A patient is conscious the entire time and once the nitrous oxide wears off, he or she will feel completely normal.
IV Sedation- If you don't want to be aware of what's going on around you during a procedure and you want to be "out of it," then IV sedation may be right for you. This pill-free method can deliver a combination of drugs through an intravenous catheter (IV) to create a state of deep relaxation and amnesia. The conscious sedation cocktail helps a patient to be free of anxiety and have no memory of the procedure. This IV sedation method works about 90 percent of the time.
