Sedation Dentistry
If just the thought of dental care makes you nervous, you might find that it's been a long time since you last had a routine checkup.
With sedation dentistry, you can receive critical care and avoid the need for costly and invasive procedures in the future.
Patients at Dr. Andrew Lunn's Chattanooga, TN, practice choose sedation for several reasons...

Deep Relaxation, Maximum Comfort, and More
No Discomfort
The most obvious benefit of sedatives at Chattanooga Family Dentistry is that you will feel little to no pain throughout your dental procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and intravenous sedation also provide a calming effect. In some cases, you might not even remember your visit to the dental office. At the same time, you will be coherent enough to follow simple instructions throughout your procedure. No Delay
Patients who are resistant to dental care are simply harder to treat. If your dentist has to break frequently or work more slowly, you might require follow-up care or have to sit in the exam chair for hours. This will only reinforce your negative association with dentistry. In contrast, sedation dentistry can help you cooperate so the dentist can provide more efficient dental treatment. No Hesitation
Sedation dentistry can have an even more profound effect than making individual dental visits more bearable. Once you realize dentistry procedures aren't as scary as you once thought, your relationship with your dentist could dramatically improve. "Helpful, accommodating, and kind."
The staff at Chattanooga Family Dental are great. I always have major anxiety going. Winston helps calm me down. Great team great dentist.

What to Expect with Oral & IV Sedation
Sedation dentistry is an excellent, trusted tool in modern dentistry. Studies have found as much as 20 percent of patients suffer from severe dental anxiety, and a large number rely on sedation for simple routine preventive care.
For deep relaxation, Dr. Lunn offers oral sedation and IV sedation. If you choose an oral sedative, you will simply take a pill before you visit our office. You might be asked to take another as soon as you meet with our team to ensure the best results. IV medications are delivered directly to the bloodstream. This type can be monitored and easily adjusted throughout your visit. With both options, you will need to have a loved one drive you to and from our dental office. They will also need to remain with you for the following 10 hours.
Nitrous Oxide: A Conservative Alternative
If you're undergoing a minor dental procedure or only have a slight case of nerves, consider nitrous oxide. Before your procedure, Dr. Lunn will place a small mask over your nose. You will be instructed to continue breathing normally. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, produces immediate effects. Unlike other forms of sedation, it also allows dental patients to feel clear-headed almost instantly after their treatment is complete. You will be able to drive following treatment if you choose this sedation option.
"They were very understanding of my anxiety without passing judgment."
Friendly staff, clean office. Everyone seemed very focused on patient education and explaining in-detail why they were doing everything. I learned a few things while I was there, for sure. I also had questions about insurance coverage on certain findings, and they provided a very easy-to-understand written estimate for everything that would fall on me. The office dog is a plus, too. He's pretty cool.

They walked me through each step of the process, listened to my concerns and were very understanding of my anxiety without passing judgment. I am very appreciative of Dr. Lunn and his staff. I would highly recommend his office to anyone, especially those that have anxiety regarding seeing the dentist.

Invest in Your Oral Health & Confidence
Unlike local anesthesia, which is only designed to block pain signals, sedation dentistry is not usually covered by insurance. Although sedation requires an upfront investment, it can save you thousands of dollars down the road. Delaying a checkup, for example, could allow a small cavity to go unnoticed. Once decay reaches the inner portion of the tooth, you might require a tooth extraction. Restoring your smile could be very costly, but this situation is typically easy to prevent. In order to ensure our patients receive timely dental care, we accept various financing options and plans to cover out-of-pocket costs.
