Teeth Whitening

Ever looked at a photo of yourself and wished your smile was brighter? Ever used a teeth whitening filter when editing an image of yourself?

Zoom!® teeth whitening is the fastest and most effective way to achieve a whiter smile.

Find out how Dr. Andrew Lunn can make your teeth eight shades whiter in one hour at our Chattanooga, TN, office.

What Is Zoom! Teeth Whitening?

Zoom! Whitening kit
Zoom! teeth whitening is the world's most popular light-activated professional teeth whitening system. It uses a bleaching gel with hydrogen peroxide as its active ingredient. The Zoom! light aids the hydrogen peroxide in penetrating the surface of your teeth. As the gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching stained tissue for a whiter, brighter smile.

Your Zoom! Questions Answered

Who can benefit from Zoom! teeth whitening?

Virtually anyone who is looking to whiten their smile can benefit from Zoom! Over time, drinks like coffee, tea, cola, and red wine stain our teeth. Many of us have turned to at-home tooth-whitening trays, whitening toothpaste, or other over-the-counter whitening treatments without getting the desired results. In-office tooth whitening is the safest, fastest, and most effective way to get the smile you've always wanted.

Is Whitening Your Teeth Common?

Yes! Teeth Whitening is the most popular procedure in cosmetic dentistry, and the Zoom! whitening system makes it easier and faster than ever before.

What are the benefits of In-Office Zoom! Whitening?

Over-the-counter tooth whitening strips, brush-on gel, and whitening toothpaste can take weeks or sometimes months to whiten your teeth just a few shades. Zoom! teeth whitening is clinically proven to whiten your teeth up to eight shades in one office visit. Thanks to the knowledge and skill of your dentist, you can be sure to get the results you want quickly and safely.

Zoom! Teeth Whitening Candidacy

Are you unhappy with your smile? Do you wish you could take years of coffee or tea stains off your teeth? Are you looking for more confidence? Have you tried whitening toothpaste, but it's just not enough? If you are in good oral health and answered "yes" to any of these questions, Zoom! Teeth Whitening could be for you.

Who Is Not a Candidate?

  • If you have issues such as gum disease, cavities, or compromised teeth, they must be resolved before undergoing teeth whitening or any other cosmetic dentistry procedure.
  • Not all stains will respond to whitening. Dr. Lunn can determine if concealment using solutions like veneers or bonding would be a better solution.
  • Since the Zoom! whitening system uses a high-powered chairside lamp to conduct the bleaching, light-sensitive individuals, people undergoing Psoralen + UV Radiation therapy (PUVA), people with melanoma or those undergoing other photo-chemotherapy are not good candidates for Zoom! Teeth Whitening.
  • Anyone taking any light-sensitive drugs should consult their primary care physician before the whitening procedure.

Dr. Andrew Lunn and the team at his Chattanooga office would be happy to answer any questions you may have or address any of your concerns.

What to Expect  During Your Zoom! Teeth Whitening Procedure

The actual Zoom! teeth whitening procedure takes just under an hour.
The actual Zoom! teeth whitening procedure takes just under an hour.

Teeth Cleaning

A teeth cleaning is performed before the bleaching process.

Protecting Your Soft Tissues

Zoom! teeth whitening requires that all soft tissue in and around the mouth be protected. After your cleaning, there is a short preparation period in which your gums and lips are covered.

Gel Application

Next, the dentist or dental assistant will apply the hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel to your teeth.

Light Activation

You will be provided with protective eyewear before the Zoom! Advanced Power Chairside Lamp is directed at the teeth for 15 minutes. This accelerates the bleaching process by activating the 25% hydrogen peroxide gel. During that time, you can relax and watch TV. Some patients are so relaxed they have even fallen asleep!

Repeat

The gel application and light activation is repeated two more times, for a total of three sessions.

Fluoride Application

After the hour of bleaching, a five-minute fluoride treatment completes the session.

Aftercare & Side Effects

With proper at-home care, your teeth can remain bright for years to come.

At-Home Care

To best maintain the whitening effects, we recommend flossing daily, brushing twice each day with whitening toothpaste, and doing occasional touchups with prescription take-home whitening trays. These trays are not something you can get over-the-counter. They are professional whitening formula products designed to keep your teeth their brightest and are only available through your dentist.

Side Effects

Increased tooth or gum sensitivity in some patients occurs during treatment but typically subsides 1-3 days after the bleaching procedure. Some patients with anxiety or a strong gag reflex may be uncomfortable during Zoom! teeth whitening, so be sure to alert your dentist during your consultation if you think this could be an issue. You can take over-the-counter pain medication to reduce discomfort.

Professional versus Over-the-Counter Whitening Treatments

Undergoing in-office whitening treatment with an experienced cosmetic dentist is the best way to minimize the chance of temporary or long-term side effects. Over-the-counter whitening products can be unpredictable. Some even have dangerously high levels of hydrogen peroxide, which can damage your teeth. Most commonly, at-home whitening treatments can give you uneven results. Consulting with your experienced cosmetic dentist is the best way to safely achieve a whiter smile.
