Creating Beautiful Smiles through Implant Dentistry

Dental Implants Chattanooga

Elite cosmetic and restorative dentist Andrew Lunn offers dental implants to our Chattanooga, Dalton, Cleveland, and Dayton patients who are missing teeth and want to regain the confidence, comfort, and control that go along with having a healthy, flawless smile. Dental implants are the best possible treatment for missing teeth as they provide unparalleled support for restorations. By installing and restoring dental implants, Dr. Lunn helps his patients achieve optimal oral health so that they can eat, speak, and smile with renewed ease and assurance.

What Are Dental Implants?

The team at Chattanooga Family Dentistry in Tennessee uses dental implants to replace missing teeth, as well as damaged or decayed teeth that cannot be salvaged through restorative dentistry. Dental implants are titanium posts that look like screws and, when embedded in the jawbone, act as artificial roots for prosthetic teeth that look and feel completely natural.

It should be noted that the placement of dental implants is a serious surgical procedure that many dentists have to refer out to oral surgeons. Dr. Lunn, however, is one of the rare dentists who perform both the surgical and restorative phases of implant dentistry. He has been certified to perform dental implant surgical procedures at both his Chattanooga office and the local hospital.

Dental Implants vs. Traditional Bridges and Dentures

If you are missing one or more teeth, Dr. Andrew Lunn most commonly suggests restoring your smile through the use of either traditional bridges and dentures or dental implant-supported restorations. At our Chattanooga dental facility, we evaluate each patient's needs during a comprehensive exam, which includes x-rays and possibly a CT scan. Through this process, Dr. Lunn will determine whether the patient is an ideal candidate for the implantation procedure. While dental implants offer patients an alternative to traditional dentures or bridgework, they do require surgery and rehabilitation. At Chattanooga Family Dentistry, our goal is to give all of our patients a fully functioning, healthy, and beautiful smile that they can feel confident about.

Are Implants Right for You?

Are you a good candidate for dental implants? The surgical procedure is an ideal option for people who are missing one or more teeth, have sufficient jawbone mass and healthy gums, and either prefer not to wear or are currently dissatisfied with their dentures. Because dental implants are screwed directly into the jawbone, a patient must have a fully developed, strong jawbone. Patients without sufficient bone tissue may improve their eligibility for dental implants by undergoing bone-grafting surgery.

If you are looking to restore the natural function of your mouth, especially if you are experiencing difficulty drinking, chewing, and talking, then implants may be the best choice for your treatment. An ideal candidate must be committed to properly managing his or her newly implanted artificial teeth and surrounding gums so infection and other complications do not occur.

Complications and Risks

Implant surgery requires drilling past the gums and directly into the jawbone, which in some cases causes infection. Although Dr. Lunn uses a gentle and accurate touch when performing dental implant surgery, the implants, once in place, can over time, cause damage to surrounding gums, teeth, or blood vessels. In some cases, a patient may experience nerve damage, causing pain throughout the mouth. If a patient continues to smoke, drink alcohol in an excess amount, or chew tobacco, he or she will reduce the probability that the dental implants will last. These harmful habits obstruct the healing process and tamper with blood flow in mouth tissue. While there is a slight possibility that implants could result in damage to your teeth and gums, there is a strong possibility that by not replacing missing teeth your jawbone will degrade, your gums will be far more prone to infection and recession, and your remaining teeth will drift out of position.
